Tuesday, August 08, 2006 WIC finally adds veggies/fruits to grocery list OMG... as a mom and as a teacher, this is simply inexplicable to me: "Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are now being added to grocery lists for low-income mothers and children under the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program that helps feed more than half the babies in the US. WIC now pays about $35 monthly for staples such as juice, eggs, cheese and milk, but the program will pay for less of those products to cover the new foods’ cost." Here's what shocking to me: 1) This program helps feed more than HALF of ALL babies in the US? 2) $35 per month for staples? My 4 yr eats cheese like a hungry rat and gulps down milk like a starving cat... how far can $35 really go? 3) They are only just beginning to see that low-income families NEED fruits, veggies, and whole grains? And yet we wonder why so many people are obese... sigh... |
