Thursday, June 08, 2006 Ayatollah Khomeni's grandson wants Bush to "occupy and liberate" Iran Somehow, this doesn't pass the smell test to me, but IT does come from the eternally tipsy Chris Hitchens, so please read w/ a grain of salt... and a veeery big shot of Tequila (via Vanity Fair): "Ayatollah Hossein Khomeini, the grandson of Ayatollah Khomeni (yep, the guy in the black turban who founded the Iranian Republic & his supporters seized the Amer Embassy and kept 52 staffers prisoner for 444 days) has called for Bush to occupy Iran and liberate them. Hitchens: "I stand," he tells me calmly, "for the complete separation of religion and the state." (Hmm, I agree w/ that. Tell me more) In terms that would make the heart of a neocon soar like a hawk, he goes on to praise Bush's State of the Union speech, to warn that the mullahs cannot be trusted w/nuclear weapons (yes, but neither can any nation), and says: "Only the Free World, led by America, can bring democracy to Iran." W-w-what?? Call me jaded and skeptical, but can we say Chalabi? We all know how fabulously Chalabi's self-serving insistence for us to occupy and liberate Iraq has gone, no? Do we need this Khomeni guy's war-happy pep talks when we have Bolton having a meltdown at the UN while he bangs the "war w/Iran" drums, and while asshats like this guy on Fox says: "If you want to see the Dow go up, let's get the bombers in the air and neutralize this Iranian threat"? |
