Friday, May 26, 2006 Jeff Skilling & Ken Lay: Guilty as Sin Skilling and Lay were found guilty of orchestrating the fraud that destroyed Enron Corp. Lay was convicted of all 6 counts of conspiracy/ fraud & faces a max of 45 yrs in prison. Skilling was found guilty of 19 counts of conspiracy, fraud, insider trading & making false statements which, combined, carry a max sentence of 185 yrs. Good. But I have to wonder if Bush feels bad for his good friends, despite spewing a bunch of Enron lies to distance himself from them. Lay, who gave $651,760 to Repukes, and Skilling, who gave $162,750 to Repukes. Eh, maybe he'll just miss the amount these cash cows gave to his coffers. This from the NYTs sums up their crimes nicely: "Lay testified that the Enron collapse was largely caused by short sellers, critical articles in The Wall St Jrnl, and a resulting panic in the marketplace. That argument is a bit like blaming a match for igniting a basement filled with gasoline." Who knows if these 2 will ever see the inside of a prison cell, let alone if they will ever truly repay their debt to society, but I hope that they do learn this lesson if they go to prison: Being violated is devastating, painful, and crushes the soul. |
