Waxman:Truth about breast cancer/abortion

Women who consult with pregnancy resource centers often get misleading information about the health risks associated w/ having an abortion, according to a report issued Mon by Dems on the House Govt Reform Committee. Congressional aides, posing as pregnant 17yr olds, called 25 pregnancy centers that have received some fedrl funding over the past 5 yrs. The aides were routinely falsely told that abortion puts women at an increased risk for cancer, infertility and stress disorders. The report was prepared for Rep Henry Waxman (whose fact finding reports give nightmares and ulcers to Repukes), and Waxman said that Americans may be divided on the issue of abortion, but no one should support misleading teenagers about basic medical facts. In Feb 2003, the Natl Cancer Institute concluded that having an abortion or miscarriage does not increase a woman's subsequent risk of developing breast cancer. And the Amer Psych Assoc said, "Severe negative reactions to having an abortion performed are rare." (... but since when do facts & scientific expertise matter to wingnuts?) Waxman summed it up best: "It's wrong to pour millions of fedrl dollars into organizations that are providing false health information to vulnerable teenagers." Yeah Henry, you're right... but that pesky lil fact merely stands in the way of their crusade and agenda.
