Tuesday, September 06, 2005 LA Times: Why FEMA Was Missing in N.O. I think the LA Times' take on this is part of the story, but I think racism and classism are the big underlying reasons for the complete clusterfuck mishandling of the disaster in the Gulf- especially in N.O. This hurricane is bigger (90,000 square miles of territory has been destroyed/ damaged and close to 2 million people have been affected directly by this hurricane's effects) and more costly than the tragic events of 9/11 (in terms of loss of life, compensation, and rebuilding). American citizens and our Govt cared more and did more to control the situation, improve the situation, and rectify the situation on 9/11 than they did in this dire natural situation that had been predicted and we were warned about repeatedly (including our govt --a Congressional record more than proves it). But I guess when an entire city comprised mainly of minorities is at stake vs the Twin Towers and our Wall Street wallets, the concern and action just flies out the window, huh? Besides, once N.O. is cleared out of some minorities, maybe the great White dream of turning N.O. into a mini-Vegas could finally come to fruition, eh? |
