Friday, August 12, 2005 GOP Paying Legal Bills of Vote Tamperer Yahoo: Despite a zero-tolerance policy on tampering with voters, the GOP has quietly paid 100s of 1000s of dollars to provide private defense lawyers for a former Bush campaign official charged with conspiring to keep Dems from voting in NH. Since charges were first filed in Dec 04, the RNC has spent more than $722,000 to provide Tobin, who has pleaded innocent, a team of lawyers from the high-powered DC law firm of Williams & Connolly. Tobin stepped down from his Bush-Cheney post a couple of weeks before the Nov 04 election after Dems suggested he was involved in the phone bank scheme. He was charged a month after the election. Paul Twomey (volunteer lawyer for NH Dems) said that "at 1st they thought it may have been the work of a few rogue GOPers who were willing to do anything to win control of the Senate, including depriving Americans of their ability to vote, but now that the RNC actually is bankrolling Tobin's defense, coupled w/ the fact that it has refused some discovery in the civil case, it really raises the questions of who are they protecting, how high does this go and who was in on this." |
