Wednesday, May 04, 2005 Poor, Pregnant & Already a Mom? Screw You FL decided to end the fight to force the 13yr old homeless girl to remain pregnant. While this is the lesser of 2 evils, I don't know which is sadder: That a 13 yr old was being forced to make her personal business public, that a 13 yr old became pregnant, that complete strangers felt they had the right to impose their will upon her- regardless of the consequences for her personally- or that she will have the abortion. Who wins? Speaking of no one winning: Meet Gabriela Flores. She is a 22yr old mom of 3 young kids. She is a migrant worker in SC, she has a fifth-grade education and speaks no English, but she became pregnant, and after the father ditched her, she asked her sis in Mexico to send her the drug Cytotec ( regularly used in nations where abortions are illegal, it is an ulcer medication, but can cause abortions if taken in large doses). She took 5 Cytotec pills and about 6hrs later, at about 3am, she aborted the now dead fetus in her bed. She didn't know what to do, so she woke up her Mexican neighbor and they buried the fetus. Flores has already spent 4 months in jail awaiting her trial on the unlawful abortion charge. She also is charged with failure to report the abortion to the county coroner. If convicted, Flores could face up to 2 yrs in state prison and a $1,000 fine. Prosecutors had considered charging her with murder. Personally, I don't like abortion. It does indeed make me more than a little uncomfortable. I adore babies and I adore motherhood. But, the alternative is far more detrimental b/c the mother pays, her education & her job pays, her (already living) children, their educations, and their upbringing pays, & whole families pay and suffer if there's not enough to go around, but all that does not matter at all to the anti-abortionist who only wants that embryo or fetus to be in the womb until it's born, come what may, maternal death, hunger, etc... all that is just secondary to "right to life" & I simply cannot and do not agree that. Abortion & euthanasia ARE NOT white and black issues, yet Pope Benny says that these 2 issues are absolutely unforgivable under ANY circumstances. Well, let's have him face being a scared pregnant teen who has been raped by a relative and then he can tell me how white & black the issue is. |
