Thursday, December 08, 2005 John Lennon Remembering his Death 25Yrs Later My parents were HUGE Beatles fans. In fact, I think The Beatles was 1of the only good things my dad associates w/Vietnam, and so very many of my childhood memories involve my parents' vast music collection. I remember the delicious big green Granny Smith looking apple on the record label of the later Beatles albums, and the 1st song I remember knowing all the words to & singing repeatedly when I would lay on the floor and color in my coloring books was "Get Back". I was really little when Lennon was murdered, but I do remember my mom crying when she heard the news, crying while she made dinner and I remember eating our porkchop and potatoes au gratin dinner while listening to Abbey Road. My dad just kept shaking his head and saying things like: "Of all the people to kill, why John Lennon? He wasn't bothering anybody. There are so many other assholes in the world this guy could've picked instead."And "Why shoot him? Jeeze, Yoko was right next to him." Yep, dad. I agree, but the Yoko comment wasn't nice. And thanks for exposing me to the cool music collection you and mom had from the 60s & 70s... esp The Beatles, Wings, and solo Lennon. I wonder what Lennon would say about the world we live in today? According to these FBI papers, he was considered a dangerous activist foe of the Republicans. In fact, in late '72, when the "surveillance" was at its peak, Lennon told humorist Paul Krassner, "Listen, if anything happens to Yoko and me, it was not an accident." But if you read what his cousin had to say about John, he was just a quiet family guy who wanted a peaceful life. I think he was a little of both. Ya can't hear "Imagine", "Happy Christmas/ War is Over", and "Give Peace a Chance" and not see that. Rest in peace John Lennon... and thanks for Get Back: Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman, but she was another man. All the girls around her say she got it coming, but she gets it while she can. Get back, get back, get back to where you once belonged... |
