Wednesday, October 05, 2005 UK Catholic Bishops: Parts of Bible Aren't True Holy crap! There is still hope in my heart for the church I so dearly loved as a child! The Times UK: The hierarchy of Britain's Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true. The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their 5 mill worshippers that they shouldn't expect total accuracy from the Bible. The document comes amid the rise of the religious Right, particularly in the US. Some Christians want a literal interpretation of the story of creation (Genesis) taught alongside Darwin’s evolution theory in schools, believing 'intelligent design' to be an equally plausible theory of how the world began. But the 1st 11 chapters of Genesis, in which 2 stories of creation are told, are among those that bishops insist cannot be historical. At most, they say, they may contain 'historical traces'. They say the Church must offer the gospel in ways appropriate to changing times, intelligible & attractive to our contemporaries, and warn of fundamentalism's intransigent intolerance dangers: Such an approach is dangerous, for example, when people of 1 nation/ group see in the Bible a mandate for their own superiority, and even consider themselves permitted by the Bible to use violence against others." |
