Wednesday, September 07, 2005 Sentrs Kyl & Santorum: Make Katrina Victims Pay Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Mama Bush just say this weekend that the sheltered victims of Katrina lived in such abject poverty that living in a bare minimum shelter was a step up from what they are used to? If these people are so poor (and yes, ALMOST ALL of the victims are poor and simply did not have the resources to escape) then how could these 2 GOP senators suggest that the victims of Hurricane Katrina must PAY for the devastation wrecked upon their lives? 1) From the Roots: Speaking about Hurricane Katrina on KFYI-FM AR radio last week, Jon Kyl said, “the question is if people know yr after yr after yr a natural disaster occurs in a particular place and people continue to build there and want to live there, should they bear the responsibility of buying insurance or should everyone else bear the responsibility?" Does this rule apply to the Bush family's beloved states of FL & TX, which have both been declared disaster areas HOW MANY times in the last 10yrs? 2) Now onto the stunningly stupid: Rick Santorum said to WTAE TV in Pittsburgh (video here, so he can't claim he was misunderstood/ misquoted!) : "...you have people who don't heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving." Yes, b/c losing your home, your job, your family is not nearly punishment enough, is it Rick? Funny, but I don't recall hearing specifically about people who were offered rides to shelters, and refused, did you? And by this rationale, then OF COURSE, reckless mountain climbers/ skiiers must pay for rescue costs, too... right? Who the fuck am I kidding? Wealthy white people ski & mnt climb. |
