Monday, September 12, 2005 Katrina Could Shape 2006 Elections Wash Post: "We may be heading toward an election in which the attitude is to throw the bums out, and if that happens, Repubs will pay the bigger prices because they are in control" as the impact of Hurricane Katrina has the potential to foment change in Washington like the terrorist strikes did 4 yrs ago. Americans are examining these 2 factors: 1) Bush did not protect/lead us in a serious crisis and 2) There is no money/resources to protect us in a serious crisis. So, voters have to really look at Bush's brand of conservatism which emphasizes an "ownership society", elevates individualism and private enterprise, which is fundamentally flawed and hostile to society's collective responsibility to help citizens, especially the neediest. Perhaps more voters need to read the NY Times article "Breakdowns Marked Path from Hurricane to Anarchy": "But an initial examination of Katrina's aftermath demonstrates the extent to which the fedrl govt failed to fulfill the pledge it made after the 9/11 attacks to face domestic threats as a unified, seamless force." Let's hope that the nation finally wakes up to these hard facts: BushWorld hurts 99% of US society, while only the wealthy top 1% gets BushWorld's exclusive protection, concern, & benefits. |
