Wednesday, November 02, 2005 Detainees Held in Secret CIA Prisons WashPost: "Virtually nothing is known about who is kept in the facilities, what interrogation methods are employed, or how decisions are made about whether they should be detained or for how long. The existence and locations of the facilities (referred to as black sites in classified WH, CIA, Justice Dept and congressional docs) are known to only a handful of officials in the US and, usually, only to the pres and a few top intelligence officers in each host country." Hmm, no wonder Cheney and CIA Dir Goss asked Congress to exempt CIA employees from legislation already endorsed by 90 senators that would bar cruel and degrading treatment of any prisoner in US custody: "While the Def Dept has produced volumes of public reports and testimony about its detention practices and rules after the abuse scandals at Abu Ghraib prison (& the unreleased Abu Ghraib pix and videos), at Gitmo, the CIA has not even acknowledged the existence of its black sites. To do so could open the US govt to legal challenges, particularly in foreign crts, and increase the risk of political condemnation at home and abroad." Funny, but it seems that the GOP only embraces personal accountability when it comes to hurting the poor and mid class w/the new bankruptcy laws, huh? |
