Al-Libi: Tortured & Has Recanted yet Still Quoted

NYTimes: "A top member of Al Qaeda in US custody was identified as a likely fabricator months before the WH began to use his statements as the foundation for its claims that Iraq trained Al Qaeda members to use biological/ chemical weapons, according to newly declassified portions of a Defense Intelligence Agency document. The document, a Feb '02 intelligence report said it was probable that the prisoner, Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, “was intentionally misleading the debriefers’’ in making claims about Iraqi support for Al Qaeda’s work w/ illicit weapons. The document provides the earliest and strongest indication of doubts voiced by US intelligence agencies about al- Libi’s credibility. W/out mentioning him by name, Bush, Cheney, Colin Powell, & other administration officials repeatedly cited al- Libi’s info as “credible’’ evidence that Iraq was training Al Qaeda members in the use of explosives and illicit weapons." Why exactly did the WH repeatedly use al-Libi's discredited lies? B/c those lies furthered their agenda, and b/c they wanted to ignore the facts that a person who is tortured- and al-Libi was- will tell you anything you want to hear just to stop the torture.
