Saturday, July 09, 2005 Toyota Chooses Canada Over US b/c Skills Lack CBC News: What was cited as a main reason why Toyota turned its back on hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies offered from several American states in favour of building a second Ontario plant? Ontario workers are well-trained. In addition to lower training costs, Canadian workers are also $4 to $5 cheaper to employ partly thanks to the taxpayer-funded health-care system in Canada. Gerry Fedchun, pres of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Assoc said this: "Nissan and Honda have encountered difficulties getting new plants up to full production in recent yrs in Mississippi and Alabama due to an untrained - and often illiterate - workforce. In AL, trainers had to use "pictorials" to teach illiterate workers how to use hightech plant equipment." This is beyond disgraceful. Why the US can't have the best-educated, healthiest citizenry in the world is a perennial question with a perennially simple answer: the Republican Party (and of course, those damned Faith-Based Assembly Lines, but I digress). The GOP must keep people as poor, stupid, sick, unhealthy, pliable, and reliant on the Party as possible, and to seem like they have any shred of humanity at all-- they throw in some Jesus talk, and then milk them for all they have. Work them to the bone, pay them nothing, and make sure that all forms of public education are priced out to stop any uppity sheep from improving their lot in life. How shameful that Canada's universal healthcare system SAVES corporations and companies money and improves Canadian chances for jobs, yet the GOP refuses to even discuss healthcare for just our American kids, b/c keeping children sick & unhealthy is such a family value, eh? ![]() |
