Friday, July 08, 2005 Day of Chaos: Compare & Contrast Bush & Blair The Mirror UK: The coincidence was extraordinary. Blair & Bush (the 2 Iraq war leaders) were side by side in Gleneagles, Scotland when London was struck yesterday. 4 yrs ago, Blair was the first leader to fly to Bush's side after the 9/11 attacks. Blair was given a chilling telephone briefing by Home Sec Charles Clarke and then visibly-shaken, the PM went back to finish a session with G8 leaders but left early to make a live TV statement, vowing never to surrender to terrorists. The contrast with Bush's reaction to the news about the 9/11 attacks could not have been more stark: After planes slammed into the twin towers the world saw an aide whisper the news to Bush who reacted with wide-eyed panic. The Prez was bundled on to his jet and kept away from the DC area & NYC while VP Cheney took shelter in a secret bunker. But yesterday Blair was strong and defiant and flew back to London to take charge of the crisis. Yep, it's nice to see that 1 of the war leaders can act like a big boy. |
