Wednesday, July 06, 2005 Padlocked Exits, Forced Preg Tests at Wal-Mart This is un-F-ing believable, but sadly, not out of the question for the immoral likes of Wal-Mart: A former Wal-Mart executive responsible for inspecting apparel factories in Central America has sued the company, accusing it of firing him for being too aggressive about finding workplace violations, like locked exits, mandatory 24-hour shifts, forced pregnancy tests for newly hired female employees (who would be dismissed if they were pregnant), no drinking water or toilet paper, no hourly pay except for being paid by piece work, and working conditions so hot that employees passed out. My hubby and I absolutely ABHOR Wal-Mart, and even though we certainly need cheap prices, we will not trade in our morals to shop there. I hope many of you do the same. |
