Monday, December 12, 2005 Quakers & Muslims Pray for Peacemakers MSNBC: As the deadline for hostage Tom Fox's execution approached in Iraq (see Fox's blog here), Muslims and Quakers gathered at a Sterling, VA mosque to pray together for his safe return and that of 3 other Western peace activists kidnapped in Baghdad 2 wks ago. Organizers translated a message from Fox's blog into Arabic and sent it to al-Jazeera tv, which they hoped would broadcast it in the Middle East. Imam Sheikh Rashid Lamptey, the center's deputy imam, said: "Our friend Tom Fox said too many are willing to die for war, and too few have been willing to die for peace. In our history, people have said these words many times. Very few have lived these words." Let's all hope and pray that the captors will find it in their hardened hearts to release these men and as Afeefa Syeed, 35, dir of the Al Fatih Academy in Herndon, VA, said: "The prayer vigil sends a very clear message to Muslims and non-Muslims alike that we will form alliances for justice. We have to depend on one another for support." |
