Thursday, June 01, 2006 Winning hearts/minds: Kill pregnant women Oh yeah... I wanna see pro-lifers defend this, and how can this possibily win over hearts and minds?? (via ABC News): "A 35 yr old pregnant Iraqi woman was shot near a security checkpt b/c according to the military: "the driver of the car ignored signals and commands to stop, so troops fired shots to disable the vehicle." I bet Italian jrnalist Giuliana Sgrena would say this "we were just disabling the vehicle" sounds strangely familiar. But besides that, according to this (via DailyMailUK): "A pregnant Iraqi woman was shot dead by US troops by "mistake" at a road block north of Baghdad, sparking another investigation into the shooting of civilians by coalition forces. The mother-to-be and her cousin were initially said by the US military to have been killed after their driver ignored repeated demands to stop while driving to a maternity hospital. But a brief statement by the Joint Co-ordination Centre said the women had been killed by mistake en route to maternity hospital." So which was it? Is this another coverup attempt? I understand jumpy on the edge troops getting scared and shooting in a heated moment, but which is it? Our actions have now left this dead woman's 36 yr old husband a widower, and her 2 living children (ages 2 and 1) motherless, AND leaves even more Iraqis wondering if the people really terrorizing their nation are insurgents or US occupiers. |
