Thursday, October 13, 2005 Religion:Off Limits for Roberts/ Totally On for Miers As Pounder points out, our Constitution states this in Article VI, Clause 3: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. So, how can Bush say this about Miers?: "People are interested to know why I picked Harriet Miers. They want to know her background. They want to know as much as they possibly can before they form opinions. Part of Harriet's life is her religion." And how can James Dobson say this about Miers?: Dobson was quoted as saying that he had discussed the nominee's religious views w/Rove. Dobson said he talked to Rove on 10/01, two days before Bush announced his choice. WTF?? Why would Rove call Dobson? Since when was Dobson part of the govt? Oh that's right... since the GOP shit on the separation of church and state. Dobson said he had been told that "Miers is an Evangelical Christian, that she is from a very conservative church, which is almost universally pro-life, that she has taken on the American Bar Association on the issue of abortion and fought for a policy that would not be supportive of abortion, that she had been a member of the TX Right to Life." Funny, b/c when John Roberts was being considered for confirmation, this is what the Talibornagains were screaming from the rooftops: "We are going to be vigilant to make sure that there is not this religious litmus test imposed." If that is true, then why does the God Squad scream w/a megaphone now that Miers is a born-again in order to "prove" she is truly conservative enough? Liberals correctly point this out: "What's wrong for Roberts can't be right for Miers. Her legal views on constitutional issues must be thoroughly explored. But whether they're shouting it from the rooftops or whispering into the ears of their rt-wing supporters, Miers's personal religious beliefs should have no place in her nomination." You can't have it both ways GOPers and Religious Fright... b/c that is beyond hypocrisy. |
