The Real Reason we Celebrate Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone. It is truly one of my beloved holidays and most favorite times of the yr. But please try to take a moment this yr to celebrate Halloween's most poignant reasons for existing: honoring the dead. If we do not properly pay our respects to the dead-- especially our own family's ancestors-- what kind of respect can we have for the living? Light a candle and pray, wish, or hope that any loved ones who have passed this yr are at peace, are at a place where they should be, had the strength needed to get to their resting place [that's why we give out treats to the kiddos dressed in costume-- due to the Celtic practice of the spirits (who didn't want to scare us in their spiritual form) dressed up in costume and begged for food to give them the strength to make their journey] and please remember all of those who have gone before us.

  1. Halloween is also my wife's favorite holiday. She always went all-out with her kids right down to gettin' all dressed up.
Sadly, though, this year she couldn't because of her chemo and now being sick on top of that. Maybe next year we can do it up right.

Hope you and that cute little devil had a good time trick-or treating.

  2. I'm so sorry to hear that she is sick on top of the chemo. I'm sure it is the last thing she needs, plus doesn't being sick stop her chemo treatments in their tracks?

I think people who love Halloween have a certain affinity w/this time of yr. It is when all is winding down and wrapping up before the cold and death that winter brings. It is the time to warm up, eat the harvest's bounty and prepare for the worst of winter that may come while being hopeful... I like that. Maybe that is why I have such love for New Orleans. It is a city that has existed by that very same sentiment since it became a settlement: You prepare as best you can for the worst but you live it up and party while the times are good.

Thank you so much Grandpa Eddie. My precious punky-doodle and I had a great time Trick and Treating, and although I was one of the few moms dressed up w/their kiddo, I loved every minute of it. The only drawback is all of the damn glitter dust that is all over my house now after applying glitter to our face makeup. My hubby especially didn't appreciate having glitter all over him and everything he wears, either:)... but we told him he looks so pretty now. He said: "Oooh... lucky me. I'm pretty and glittery."-- what a smartass.
